HENRI CHAPELLE AMERICAN CEMETERY

The Henri Chapelle American cemetery is situated in the town of Aubel just east of Liege.

In true American tradition this cemetery is immaculately maintained. It is peculiar in the fact that it is on both sides of the highway with a wall of remembrance on the one side, the graves on the other.

There are some 7,000 graves in which the remains of dead soldiers lie – about 100 them have the Magen David on the headstone. Unlike the geometrically arranged cemetery in Normandy these graves have been set in an arch design with white crosses on the green lawns and a symmetrical garden.

On the pillars of the huge entrance are the names of the soldiers missing in action, so that they too are honoured.

I have on a previous trip visited the American Cemetery in Luxembourg in which about 10,000 American are buried including General Patton.

Having visited all these American cemeteries leaves me in no doubt as to the contribution the USA made in the fight against the evil Nazi regime.
